Mt Sabotin lies at the crossroads of Nova Gorica and the Vipava Valley, the Brda Hills, the Soča Valley and the cross-border Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
The emerald ribbon of the Soča River winds along the northern slope of Mt Sabotin, separating it from Mt Sveta Gora. Just below Mt Sabotin, the river enters the Goriško Lowland, which is a large Soča-made gravel fan and the easternmost outcrop of the Friulian Plain. The left bank of the plain features twin cities: the original Gorizia and the fledgling Nova Gorica, which will share the title European Capital of Culture 2025 under the joint name GO! 2025.
At the foot of Mt Sabotin, the world-famous Solkan Bridge spans the Soča River with its jaw-dropping 85-metre arch, making it the biggest stone railway bridge in the world. There are two other, more recent, bridges in the vicinity: a road bridge leading from Goriška Brda to Mt Sabotin, and a footbridge for hikers, cyclists and other casual visitors. The footbridge is currently the longest suspension bridge in Slovenia.
The top of Mt Sabotin affords spectacular views of the renowned pilgrimage site of Sveta Gora and its Franciscan monastery. Hiking along the ridge of Mt Sabotin to the south-eastern edge and the 535 m high peak with the ruins of St Valentine's Church will reward you with the best view of both Nova Gorica and Gorizia.
Built in 1985, the Osim Road aka the Sabotin Road is a regional road that leads from Solkan to Goriška Brda over an arched bridge. In a closed 1.6 km long corridor, the road cuts through Italian territory. The name comes from the 1975 Treaty of Osimo which settled the border and economic issues between Italy and Yugoslavia.
